Biologic therapy

Targeted medicines for moderate-to-severe psoriasis and eczema.

What are biologics?

Biologics are medicines made from living cells. Rather than acting on the whole immune system, each one targets a specific part of it, such as a particular protein that drives the inflammation behind psoriasis or eczema.

What they are used for

  • Psoriasis: moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, and psoriatic arthritis.
  • Eczema (atopic dermatitis): moderate-to-severe eczema that is not well controlled with creams or ointments.

Biologics are often considered when treatments applied to the skin, or other options, have not been enough.

How they are given

Biologics are given as an injection under the skin or as an infusion through an IV, depending on the medicine. Some injections can be given at home once you have been shown how. Others are given in a medical office or an infusion center. How often depends on the medicine.

Screening and follow-up

  • Before you start, you will usually need some tests, often blood tests and screening for tuberculosis (TB).
  • Because biologics calm part of the immune system, they can raise the risk of infection. Call your provider if you have a fever, cough or flu-like symptoms.
  • You will have regular follow-up visits so your provider can see how the treatment is working and watch for side effects.
  • Tell your provider about all the medicines you take, if you are pregnant or planning to be, and before you get any vaccine.

Is a biologic right for me?

No single biologic works for everyone, and the choice depends on your condition, and your health history. Talk with your provider about the possible benefits, risks and other options.

Biologics at The Skin Clinic

Our providers treat moderate-to-severe psoriasis and eczema, including with biologic medicines. At your visit, your provider can talk with you about which biologic options may fit your condition, what screening you would need first, and how follow-up visits would work. Coverage for biologics varies by plan, so please check with your insurance as well.
