Procedure guide

Surgical excision

An excision removes a growth, such as a skin cancer or cyst, along with a small margin of normal skin, and the wound is closed with stitches.

How long

Usually 30 to 60 minutes, depending on size and location.

How to prepare

  • Take your usual medicines unless told otherwise; do not stop a prescribed blood thinner on your own.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area.
  • Avoid alcohol for a day or two before surgery if your provider advises it.

Recovery

Expect mild soreness and some bruising. Avoid stretching the area, heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for about one to two weeks, or as advised. Stitches are typically removed in one to two weeks.

Aftercare

  • Keep the bandage dry for the time recommended, then clean daily and apply petroleum jelly.
  • Use acetaminophen for discomfort unless told otherwise.
  • Call for bleeding that will not stop with pressure, signs of infection, or if the wound opens.

When to call us
