Procedure guide

Cryotherapy (freezing)

Cryotherapy uses extreme cold, usually liquid nitrogen, to destroy abnormal skin cells. It is commonly used for actinic keratoses, warts and some benign growths.

How long

A few seconds to a minute per spot. Several spots can be treated in one visit.

How to prepare

  • No special preparation is needed.
  • Let your provider know if you have had problems with cold sensitivity.

Recovery

The area stings during and shortly after treatment. Over the next day it may turn red, swell or form a blister, then a scab that falls off in one to three weeks. A lighter or darker mark may remain.

Aftercare

  • Wash gently with soap and water; you can shower normally.
  • If a blister forms, leave it intact; cover with a bandage if needed.
  • Apply petroleum jelly to help healing.
  • Call if you notice signs of infection or a spot does not heal.

When to call us
