Growths & spots

Warts

Warts are skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are common, contagious through contact, and can appear on the hands, feet (plantar warts) and other areas.

Common signs

  • Rough, raised bumps
  • Tiny dark dots (clotted blood vessels)
  • Flat or thread-like growths
  • Painful spots on the soles of the feet

How it is treated

Many warts go away on their own, but treatment can speed things up. Options include freezing (cryotherapy), prescription topical medicines, and other in-office treatments.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist if warts are spreading, painful, on the face or genitals, or not improving with home treatment.
