Skin cancer & precancers

Sun damage

Years of ultraviolet (UV) exposure can cause early aging and raises the risk of skin cancer. Sun damage builds up over time, so protecting skin at any age helps.

Common signs

  • Wrinkles and leathery texture
  • Brown spots (sun spots)
  • Rough, scaly patches
  • Visible small blood vessels

How it is treated

Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, protective clothing and shade are the foundation. A dermatologist can check for precancers and discuss treatments and products for sun-damaged skin.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist for a full skin check if you have significant sun exposure, a history of sunburns, or any spot that is changing.
