Skin cancer & precancers

Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common skin cancer. It usually appears on sun-exposed skin and can grow and occasionally spread if not treated, so early treatment is important.

Common signs

  • Rough, scaly red patch
  • Firm, raised bump, sometimes with a central crust
  • Open sore that does not heal
  • Wart-like growth

How it is treated

Treatment options include surgical excision, Mohs surgery and, for selected cancers, superficial radiation therapy. Your provider will recommend an approach based on the cancer and your health.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist promptly for any growing, crusting or non-healing spot, especially on the face, ears, lips or hands.
