Growths & spots

Seborrheic keratosis

Seborrheic keratoses are very common, harmless growths that appear with age. They often look waxy and “stuck on” the skin.

Common signs

  • Brown, black or tan growths
  • Waxy, scaly or slightly raised
  • Look pasted onto the skin
  • Can be single or many

How it is treated

No treatment is needed, but growths that are irritated or bothersome can be removed, for example by freezing or scraping.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist if a growth looks different from the others, changes quickly, or bleeds, so skin cancer can be ruled out.
