Nail fungus

Nail fungus (onychomycosis) is a common infection that makes nails thick, discolored and brittle. It is more common in toenails and in older adults.

Common signs

  • Yellow, white or brown discoloration
  • Thickened or crumbly nails
  • Nail lifting from the nail bed
  • Distorted nail shape

How it is treated

Because other conditions can look similar, a dermatologist may test a nail sample first. Treatment can include prescription topical or oral antifungal medicines.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist if nails are painful, changing, or if you have diabetes or poor circulation.
