Common signs
- Raised, shiny, firm scar
- Extends past the original injury
- Itching, tenderness or pain
- Common on earlobes, chest, shoulders and upper back
How it is treated
Treatments include steroid injections, silicone sheets, cryotherapy, surgical removal and, in selected cases, superficial radiation therapy after removal to help reduce the chance of the keloid returning.
When to see a dermatologist
See a dermatologist if a scar keeps growing, is painful or itchy, or if you have had keloids before and are planning surgery or a piercing.
