Hair loss

Hair loss has many causes, including genetics (pattern hair loss), stress or illness (telogen effluvium), immune conditions such as alopecia areata, scalp conditions, and hairstyles that pull on the hair.

Common signs

  • Gradual thinning on top of the head
  • Widening part
  • Round bald patches
  • Sudden shedding of large amounts of hair

How it is treated

A dermatologist will look for the cause, which may include an exam of the scalp and sometimes blood tests or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the cause and may include topical or oral medicines or injections.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist if hair loss is sudden, patchy, accompanied by scalp itching or pain, or worrying you.
