Growths & spots

Skin cysts

A cyst is a closed sac under the skin filled with keratin or other material. Epidermoid cysts are common, usually harmless and can appear anywhere on the body.

Common signs

  • Smooth, round lump under the skin
  • Sometimes a small dark pore at the center
  • Can become red, swollen and painful if inflamed
  • Slow growth over time

How it is treated

Many cysts need no treatment. Inflamed cysts may be treated with injection or drainage, and cysts that bother you or keep returning can be removed surgically.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist if a lump is growing, painful, draining, or if you are unsure what it is.
