Skin cancer & precancers

Basal cell carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer. It grows slowly and rarely spreads, but it can damage surrounding tissue if left untreated. It is closely linked to sun exposure.

Common signs

  • Pearly or waxy bump
  • Flat, scar-like patch
  • A sore that bleeds, heals and returns
  • Pink growth with a raised edge

How it is treated

Treatment depends on size, location and type and may include surgical excision, Mohs surgery, topical treatments, or superficial radiation therapy for selected cancers.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist for any sore that does not heal within a few weeks or any new, shiny or bleeding growth.
