Skin cancer & precancers

Actinic keratosis

Actinic keratoses (AKs) are rough, scaly spots caused by years of sun exposure. They are considered precancerous because a small number can develop into squamous cell carcinoma.

Common signs

  • Rough, sandpaper-like patches
  • Pink, red or skin-colored
  • On sun-exposed areas: face, ears, scalp, hands, arms
  • Easier to feel than to see

How it is treated

Common treatments include freezing (cryotherapy), prescription creams, and other field treatments for areas with many spots. Daily sun protection helps prevent new ones.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist for rough spots that do not heal, and for regular skin checks if you have had a lot of sun exposure.
