Common skin conditions

Acne

Acne happens when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and sometimes deeper cysts. It is most common in teens but often continues into adulthood.

Common signs

  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Red, tender bumps or pus-filled pimples
  • Deep, painful nodules or cysts
  • Dark marks or scarring after breakouts

How it is treated

Treatment depends on the type and severity of acne and may include topical medicines (such as retinoids or benzoyl peroxide), oral medicines, and a skin care routine tailored to your skin. Treating acne early can help prevent scarring.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist if over-the-counter products have not helped after a few months, if acne is painful or deep, or if it is leaving marks or scars.
